If you haven’t yet, watch the documentary on Iris Apfel, which I keep revisiting in my mind.

She is a charming, wonderful woman to be around and I found her uniquely inspiring.

Calligraphy I: Writing in Classic Modern Script
An Online Skillshare Class by Bryn Chernoff

My first of three modern calligraphy courses for Skillshare is now live! Teaser above.

Calligraphy I: Writing in Classic Modern Script is a one-hour course, broken into 16 short video lessons, four project steps with a whole collection of worksheets and handy resources I created to help with your practice. The final project is to write a meaningful name, quotation, or passage in a simple calligraphy script. This enjoyable project is a perfect way to spend time with words you love, grow your calligraphy skills, and practice making artistic decisions in pursuit of beautiful handwriting.

cameron moll : brooklyn bridge poster

Cameron Moll‘s letterpress masterpiece of type is not just a beautiful representation of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. “In the artwork, there’s a metric tonne of hidden text: names of the architect, engineers, and laborers that perished; shops and restaurants in Brooklyn; and other items with relation to the bridge…The time spent designing the artwork was more than 300 hours, but the time spent doing research—trips to Brooklyn, studying the bridge, selecting typefaces, thoroughly annotating The Great Bridge—is easily double or triple that amount.”

You may notice the typo in “Brooklyn” on the images — there’s a funny story to go along with that too. Check out his website dedicated to the project and explore options for purchase. Bravo Cameron!

So thrilled with the images from Emily and Marco’s wedding at Wave Hill, which is now featured in the 2014 Martha Stewart Real Weddings special issue. It was the result of a lot of hard work by a great team, listed below.

Paperfinger contributed all the calligraphy for print and individual paper goods, as designed and produced by the superb Katie of Katie Fischer Design. You can see the calligraphy invitation suite pictured in the magazine’s spread below. It was letterpressed and then each piece hand-painted with a light wash of watercolor by Katie.

Sad to hear that one of my favorite shops, KIOSK, is closing it’s doors on Spring Street because the building is being torn down. They’ll likely reopen somewhere else in the city, but who knows where for now. So get in for big sales while you can, or shop online. Use code ADIOS95 or 41AHOY for 25% off everything and 75% off sale items.

Here are a few current finds from around the world.

From the offices of Martha Stewart Weddings, to my own Brooklyn studio, to the floral studio of Poppies & Posies, to several co-hosted workshops: in Portland with Neither Snow and at the letterpress headquarters of Regas New York, I had the pleasure of hosting quite a few calligraphy workshops in 2013 and met lots of lovely folks in the process. Stay tuned for the next series later this spring (subscribe for updates at the bottom of this post).

We created invitations and illustrated table signs for Eve & Nick’s wedding on the rooftop terrace at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Great to see it featured on Style Me Pretty this past November! You can view the full gallery there.

Eve writes: “A brunch-themed cocktail hour included egg and cheese crostini, french toast bites, and mimosas, bellinis and Bloody Marys. In lieu of table numbers, we assigned each table a New York City landmark, illustrated and calligraphed by Paperfinger, who also designed our invitations. We set locations based on the guests seated at each table — for example, we sat at the Museum of Natural History table, the New York landmark where we got engaged, and in a winking nod to our sense of humor, we sat the groom’s high school friends, all native New Yorkers, at the Times Square table.”
